Red Seige Written and Directed by David C. Gabert Fri/Sat evenings, Aug 8 - 23, 2008 ~ 7 pm Fort Whoop-Up an interactive murder mystery Tickets: $15 available at Fort Whoop-Up
Take a step back in time to 1869 at Fort Whoop-Up and you’ll find a place bustling with entrepreneurial spirit and a chaotic centre of commerce where danger looms and the air is thick with excitement.
Today, the fort is no doubt a far cry from those days of trading pelts and drinking whisky. But for a few weeks this month, the fort will come alive with scoundrels from the past during the Red Siege interactive murder mystery Aug. 8-23.
The idea for the show was born three years ago when David Gabert, general manager for Drama Nutz Productions, began working at the fort as a senior site host.
He wanted to bring the fort to life with colourful characters from the past, just like at Fort Edmonton in the province’s capital city, but knew it would be hard to sustain in a smaller market.
Thus, the idea for a murder mystery fundraiser for the national historic site soon came into play and it wasn’t long before Gabert was working on his first show, then three the second year, and six shows three years later.
“I thought it would be interesting to bring the fort to life, even if it is just for a few nights,” said Gabert. “It offers a normal theatre experience, but also a chance to interact with the cast and find out a bit of the city’s history.”
The story begins with strong rumours of a force coming west to stop the whisky trade. Even some of the most dedicated men at the fort are starting to have their doubts in the continued survival of Fort Whoop-Up, causing a division in the men between those who would flee the coming siege of the red serge and those who will stand by the fort, and view the others as traitors.
What makes the show unique from a regular theatre experience, said Gabert, is that the audience plays an integral part, being viewed by the other scoundrels as fellow fur traders at the fort.
Every member of the audience has a chance to wander around and interact with the cast of 12 colourful characters. Once the murder occurs, the audience will have the opportunity to put on their detective hats and question each of the suspects to try to determine who committed the murder.
The interactive murder mystery will run Fri and Sat evenings. Doors open nightly at 6:30 pm with the show beginning at 7 pm Two short acts will be on hand before the murder takes place. Tickets for the theatre experience are $15 and are available at Fort Whoop-Up by calling 329-0444 or through Drama Nutz Productions at 892-8719.
