President’s Report – February 26, 2008
As I was reviewing the activities and events of our club, I was surprised at the number as well as the variety. I would like to review them by category:
Productions –
Come Blow Your Horn
Regional One-Act Drama Festival (Our club had the opportunity to host the festival, with Rita Peterson coordinating the event. Congratulations to Cyndy Starzyk-Frey on the successful performance of her own original play).
Lethbridge Idol, a Killer Event
The Nerd
Cash On Delivery!
Playgoers by Request – or “We’re Not Just Pretty Faces”
Murder Mystery Dinner Fundraiser for Canadian Diabetes Association
We FINALLY accomplished a goal the club has had for some time with grateful thanks to Kate for sharing her writing and creative talents, her time in organizing rehearsals and pulling the whole thing together. Those involved had a wonderful time, from all reports.
The Murder Mystery workshop organized by Rita Peterson, was well attended and very helpful.
Symphony Women’s Fashion Show
Sheila Matson, Shirley Kopitzke and other club members helped the Symphony Women with their fundraising project, keeping Playgoers name in the public eye, working very hard by providing costumes and models, and having fun at the same time.
Allied Arts Council Arts Expo
We provided an information booth on a lovely summer day. Those involved enjoyed it but felt that as the event was a “first”, it may become a more meaningful event.
Lethbridge Community Band – Ushering at their concert – again assisting another group while keeping our name in the public eye.
Representatives at various Allied Arts Council meetings and the Mayor’s Luncheon
Provided 2 scholarships and a trophy to the 2007 Kiwanis Music and Speech Arts Festival
The Cherie Baunton Scholarship of $150.00 was awarded to Daryna Friesen
The Fran and Ern Bayly Memorial Scholarship of $500.00 was awaded to Megan Smienk.
The Ernest E. Bayly Memorial Trophy was awarded to Cassie MacLennan
Workshops
The workshops held were well done and very informative, thanks mainly to Kate Connelly. She made arrangements for and in one case, became the expert and teacher for an acting workshop that was very much appreciated by those in attendance.
Members Mac Putici and Danica Anderson, provided an improvisational workshop for a “SHED the Mask” project in the high schools.
Stacy Green provided a brief workshop to demonstrate how to sign up and navigate our new website.
Mixed Feelings
2007 brought with it the sad new of the passing of former Playgoers members and friends Al Greenway, Michael Skaronski and Lois Dongworth. The great news is having the opportunity to welcome new members, and a former member and see them “strut their stuff” on stage and back stage in Cash On Delivery!
Looking Forward
2008 is the 85th anniversary of our club. Let’s all work hard to make it a banner year.
Personal thanks go out most sincerely to those who have served with me on your executive this past term. It has been a privilege for me to rub shoulders with some of the best of the best.
Respectfully submitted.
